~A Jump Start on Potty Training~
We start working on potty training very young. One of the hardest parts about getting a puppy is the potty training. I know it can be frustrating for new owners. I try very hard to work with the puppies to give them a head start. As I have said before, I am not a kennel. I CAN and DO give my puppies all the extra attention that they require to become well adjusted, in most cases therapy dogs, and wonderful family pets. I try to think of what I would like when I get a new puppy and what would be helpful. Potty training and crate training were the first things that came to mind! I pay special attention to these things and try to get the puppies off to a good start before they are even picked up.
Starting around 5 weeks their play pen is separated into two areas, a sleep/play area and a potty area. When they are old enough to eat puppy food, they eat and then they are immediately taken outside, weather permitting, and told to "potty", they catch on very fast! As they get older we follow the 5 minute rule, 5 minutes after eating, drinking, or sleeping they are taken outside to the same spot. I give them a treat right when I see them going potty, very quickly they associate the treat with going potty. I start ALL puppies on a potty system to give them a good jump start on potty training. In the summer months we take advantage of the nice weather and try to be outside as much as possible. Getting the puppy use to the idea that grass is great place to potty, we set up a large outside "play pen" and again it is divided into play and potty areas.
I use the "Fresh Patch" grass in the house and have been very happy with it and have been told by many, many people that their puppies are going potty outside right away! In the cooler months this has been great! We start putting the grass in their pen around 5-6 weeks. As soon as they are old/big enough to get up on the grass, it is there! Each Cascade Cavalier puppy will have at least 3 weeks potty training on grass before being placed.
